What is Swedish Massage?
A Swedish fencing master and physiologist, Per Henrik Ling, instigated a system known as the Swedish Movement treatment, in which massage played a central role. The massage was based on techniques he had learned in the Far East, which helped keep his fencing students supple and agile. The use of these techniques developed in the West into what we now know as Swedish Massage. This focuses on the musculo-skeletal system and uses recognised movements, such as Effleurage, Friction, Petrissage, Tapotement and Percussion, to manipulate the soft tissue of the body to reduce muscle spasm and relieve pain. As well as affecting each of the physiological systems of the body, for example cardiovascular, lymphatic, endocrine, etc. Swedish Massage also has the psychological effect of either invigoration or relaxation.
The Diploma in Swedish Massage course provides a thorough grounding in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology coupled with extensive 'hands-on' massage experience.
A First Aid course and certificate are also included as part of the Swedish Massage Diploma course.
On the business side, Practice Development - how to start and run your own therapy practice - is included in the course to give the successful student the skills needed to succeed as a therapist. Relevant Health & Safety practices and requirements are also covered.
The course meets the curriculum requirements set for Swedish Massage by the General Council for Massage Therapy.
"Best and most professional courses I have ever attended! Great atmosphere, tuition and encouragement. Thanks to the Western I now have a thriving practice."
